In the decaying urban sprawl of Los Angeles, John Nada, a down-on-his-luck construction worker, searches for honest labor. He encounters a mysterious church, discovering a box of sunglasses hidden within its walls. Putting them on, the world warps into stark black and white, revealing subliminal messages plastered everywhere – “Obey,” “Consume,” “Marry and Reproduce” – and, more shockingly, that many people are actually skull-faced aliens living amongst humanity. Horrified, Nada tries to warn others, but is met with disbelief and violence, particularly from Frank Armitage, a fellow construction worker who refuses to believe the truth even after a brutal fistfight. Pursued by the alien authorities and their human collaborators, Nada and Frank reluctantly team up with Holly Thompson, a television station employee who initially dismisses Nada’s claims but soon witnesses the horrifying reality for herself. Together, they join an underground resistance movement aiming to expose the aliens’ signal, broadcast through a television station, which keeps the majority of humans unknowingly enslaved, unable to see the aliens’ true forms or the subliminal messages. In a desperate attempt to disrupt the signal, Nada, Frank, and Holly face relentless alien forces and brainwashed humans, leading to a bloody showdown at the television station, where Nada must make the ultimate sacrifice to destroy the signal and awaken humanity, even if it means losing everything.
