Rio de Janeiro, 1971. The vibrant samba rhythms of Carnival are a distant memory, replaced by the ominous hum of military helicopters. “I’m Still Here” opens with a seemingly ordinary family dinner at the Paiva residence. Eunice Paiva, played by Fernanda Torres, carefully navigates a conversation with her husband, Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), a former politician increasingly vocal against the regime. Their daughter, Veroca (Valentina Herszage), a spirited young woman, bristles at the cautious whispers, yearning for open defiance. The seemingly normal evening shatters when armed soldiers storm the house, dragging Rubens away without explanation. Eunice, left reeling, discovers the world has become a treacherous landscape of fear and censorship. With the help of a sympathetic friend, Dalva Gasparian (Maeve Jinkings), Eunice embarks on a desperate quest to find her husband, plunging into the dark heart of the dictatorship, where truth is a dangerous weapon and hope is a fragile flame. Her fight for Rubens becomes a fight for her family’s survival, forcing her to reinvent herself to protect what remains.

I’m Still Here Movie Storyline
In the tumultuous era of Brazil’s 1971 military dictatorship, Eunice Paiva, portrayed with resolute strength by Fernanda Torres, finds her privileged world shattered when her husband, the former politician Rubens Paiva, vanishes after a violent encounter with the regime’s forces. As the days turn into weeks, and the military offers only vague, contradictory accounts, Eunice embarks on a relentless quest for truth, navigating a landscape of fear and oppression. She forms an unlikely alliance with Dalva Gasparian, a sympathetic journalist, who uses her limited platform to subtly question the official narrative, risking her own safety in the process. Meanwhile, Veroca, Eunice’s daughter, struggles to reconcile her idealized vision of her father with the chilling realities of the dictatorship, adding another layer of emotional turmoil. Driven by unwavering love and a refusal to be silenced, Eunice tenaciously confronts powerful figures like Baby Bocayuva, a shadowy government official, piecing together fragments of information that expose the horrifying truth behind her husband’s disappearance. The film culminates in a bittersweet revelation, where Eunice, though scarred by loss, emerges as a symbol of resilience, her courage inspiring a generation to challenge the oppressive regime and ensuring that Rubens’ memory, and the countless others who disappeared, would never be forgotten, proving that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit endures, and hope can be reborn.
